Tween 80
Physical and chemical properties:
Tween 80 has a strong odor and a slightly bitter taste. It forms a gel at low temperatures and recovers when heated. Easy to dissolve in water, soluble in ethanol, vegetable oil, ethyl acetate, methanol, toluene, insoluble in mineral oil.
Production method:
Under alkaline catalysis, ethylene oxide undergoes addition reactions with sorbitol fatty acid esters and sorbitan fatty acid esters, where 20 moles of ethylene oxide are added for every 1 mole of sorbitol or corresponding sorbitan.
Purpose:
Tween 80 is a non-ionic emulsifier synthesized artificially and widely used in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical formulations.
